With so much focus on paid marketing solutions (Facebook Ads, LinkedIn Ads, Google AdWords etc etc), when you’re an early stage startup like getsubly.com you just don’t have the money to burn on paid strategies right from the start.

So, how exactly do you get your first 100, 1000, 10k users and beyond?

  • Build a community (people who really want to help you spread the word)
  • Ask for feedback (and keep asking again and again to improve your product) * Create a load of content (vlogs, blogs, videos and articles)
  • Use your product in your marketing (it’s your #1 differentiator right?)
  • Create a buzz (as much noise as you can about launches and updates)
  • Plan plan plan (make sure you’re ready for releases and go for it…)

This week we had another 1000 users joined Subly, which is a phenomenal achievement, and we’re growing every single day!

But, I want to share with the community who may be producing their own startup, or thinking about kind of what marketing they could be doing to grow their business even further.

I wanted to kind of dive in and give you a few juicy secrets of what we’re up to!

The first thing with Subly is that before we even launched, we had a landing page, and we we grew a large, community that wanted wanted Subly, and we ask them questions every single day.

  • So we started with a landing page, no products, and we built our products around our users, which has allowed us to build a user and a creator base of people who want to help promote Subly because they love it so much.

So our users are our advocates and that is the best thing about Subly.

The second piece is that whenever we launch something we build a lot of buzz around it. So, we will really think about who we’re targeting, how we’re going to get to those users on. We’ll build a strategy before we even launch.

  • Now, this takes kind of months for us to plan, and it is a combination of marketing team working with our product team to understand what’s coming, and are we going to launch on time, and have we got enough time for testing?

So it’s all about the planning. We suddenly we never launch something without a plan behind it.

On top of that, the last thing is that we have spent barely anything on marketing. We’ve done the first two items that I just mentioned really well.

And, the third piece of marketing around kind of spending or digital marketing: we haven’t spent a single thing on marketing.

That’s because the other two elements are so powerful.

  • The one thing I would say is that we do produce a lot of content. We use our product every single day. As you can see, I’m doing a video now and using Subly to use it.

So, we’re getting the word out there. So, there’s a lot of word of mouth marketing that happens with Subly. Whether that’s through our content through YouTube, and having these videos or whether that’s our existing users promoting Subly.

So, there’s our three tips on how you can grow your company, your start -up, your business, your idea from spending nothing and how you can leverage your team or producing it yourself.

A lot of this we did ourselves.We dont have big, big budget we don’t have a big team. And, we have to really be agile with how we’re spending our money and spend the money in the right places!
